In general, reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body. These abnormal structures may be caused by a variety of factors. The more common are congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. Reconstructive surgery strives to improve function, but sometimes is also used to create as “normal” an appearance as possible.

In some cases, patients may find that a procedure commonly thought to be aesthetic may be performed to achieve a reconstructive goal. For example, an adult whose face is asymmetrical due to paralysis might have a balancing facelift. Breast reduction is another example of surgery that may be reconstructive in nature, instead of aesthetic.

Insurance Coverage
Reconstructive surgery is generally covered by most health insurance policies, although coverage may vary widely. Some procedures could be considered either reconstructive or cosmetic, depending on the individual’s particular situation. Such procedures may require special review by an insurance company. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is one example. If eyelid surgery is performed solely to improve appearance, it is considered cosmetic. If it is performed to correct drooping eyelids that obscure vision, it may be considered reconstructive. With some procedures, even though appearance is improved, when the main goal is to restore function, the procedure is reconstructive.
