Common Questions About Tattoo Removal
The Q-Switched laser is frequently used in the removal of tattoos. The onset of laser technology has improved the method by which tattoos can be removed with minimal scarring. Prior to the laser, tattoo removal may have involved dermabrasion, surgical excision or other methods that may have left behind a scar in the place of the tattoo. Advanced technology has allowed the removal of unsightly tattoos without as great a risk of leaving behind a noticeable scar.
The laser uses a specific light wavelength, which targets the tattoo ink in the skin. The tattoo ink is destructed, absorbed and removed through the body's own filtering system. By directing the light wavelength to a specific area, minimal damage is done to the surrounding skin while providing maximum tattoo removal. Overall improvement and possible elimination of the tattoo can be achieved through this process.

Several sessions may be needed to achieve the desired result. Tattoo inks penetrate the skin at varying depths or degrees. Without the knowledge of how deep the tattoo was placed, the clinician will not be able to advise you precisely as to how many sessions it may take to remove the tattoo. Generally speaking, professional tattoos can be removed within 3-6 sessions, while amateur tattoos may take fewer sessions. The clinician will be able to discuss with you the risks, benefits and possible timeframe you may be looking at to remove your particular tattoo.
Generally, the majority of the tattoo will fade or disappear completely. Different colors of ink respond differently to the laser treatment. While black, blue or red may respond very well to the laser, green and yellow generally are very difficult to remove and may require several sessions. The clinician will be able to evaluate your tattoo and discuss with you the probability of achieving your desired result.
Tattoo removal by laser is generally well tolerated and not painful. A topical anesthesia may be applied prior to the procedure to aid in minimizing the discomfort. The procedure has been compared to the sensation felt when the tattoo was initially applied. The recovery period is well tolerated, and multiple sessions would be timed approximately one month apart.
At your consultation, the clinician will go over the laser procedure in detail. There will be ample opportunity for you to have your questions and concerns addressed by the clinician. Tattoo removal using laser technology provides a method of improving the overall appearance of the skin and removing the undesired tattoo.
